Pond Pumps for Filtration
Pond filter pumps need to be able to move solid matter out of the pond and into a filter. We recommend the Hozelock Titan or Yamitsu Solids Handling pond pumps. These pumps are also ideal for waterfalls and cascades though not suitable for fountains where the lack of a foam pre-filter would soon block the fountain head.
Fountain Pond Pumps
Fountains require a high pressure pond pump that has a pre-filter foam or a very closely spaced filter cage. This stops the fountain head from blocking to quickly. Unfortunately in murky ponds this means fairly regular cleaning of the pump filter cage or sponge. This makes this type of pond pump unsuitable for filters unless you are prepared for a lot of cleaning chores. Pond pumps of this type include the Lotus Baby Otter.
Hybrid Pond Pump
When the buyer requires a pond pump to run both a pond filter and fountain he should look at the new hybrid type of pond pump such as the Blagdon Amphibious, Hozelock Cascade or Fish Mate pump range. This type of pond pump has a close meshed grill instead of a pre-filter sponge, so does not block as quickly as a traditional fountain pump. However it will need more maintenance than a filter or solids handling pond pump. We highly recommend the Fish Mate pond pumps as they have develop an impeller that resists clogging for longer periods, and have sensible fountain heads that twist off quickly (saving broken finger nails) for the inevitable cleaning of the pumps fountain head.
