Why Test
pH is a measurement that indicate acidity. When the pH is under 7 the water is acid,. Big fluctuations are harmful to fish. The best pH value for most fish is between 7.0 and 7.5. Some species (fish from the amazon rain forest for example) require a more acid environment, thus a lower pH, pond fish generally require a PH of around 7.0 to 8.0. Your fish supplier should be able to inform you if there are special requirements for the fish of your choice.
It is worth remembering that ammonia becomes more toxic at higher pH levels.
How to Test
In order to test the pH level, simply take a sample of pond water in a jug, and then use some of this to wash out the test vial.
1. Fill the vial to the 5ml mark
2. Add 5 drops of pH test liquid, close vial and shake vigorously
3. Wait 2 minutes and compare the colour of the sample with the colour scale that you can find on the packaging.
